About Quadra

Nestled between British Columbia's mainland coast and Vancouver Island, Quadra Island is home to 2700 year-round residents. The largest of the Discovery Islands, Quadra is reached by 10-minute ferry ride from the Vancouver Island town of Campbell River. Visitors from around the Globe come to Quadra to take in its unparalleled combination of natural beauty, spectacular wild and marine life, friendly people, rich cultural history, and endless adventure recreation.

Quadra's surrounding ocean waters are literally brimming with marine life including dolphins, orcas, porpoises, and seals. Sportfishing is a major draw to the Island. The varied shoreline and many bays are easily explored on your own by ocean kayak. Diving and tour companies offer many options for exploring further afield.

Two hundred kilometres of hiking trails meander through Quadra's shorelines, lakes, mountaintops, and old growth forests. The hiking trails are of various length and difficulty and are well suited for family outings. The trails are mapped, marked, and well maintained. Additional trails and back roads make Quadra a mountain bikers paradise. As one of North America's largest Bald Eagle habitats, Quadra's skies will thrill any bird-watcher.

Heriot Bay and Rebecca Spit, located only 10 minutes from both the Bold Bay property by boat or car, offer a spectacular sandy spit, shopping, post office, liquor store, restaurant, public marina with fuel and service, fish charters, diving charters, kayak touring, ocean wildlife safaris, and ferry to Cortes Island-known for its artists and marine lagoons.

Quathiaski Cove, where the ferry from Campbell River lands, offers additional shopping and services, such as a drug store, car service, gas station, bank machine, lumber and hardware store, and unique local artist studios and stores. During the summer months (May-September), a Saturday Farmers Market features local artwork, fresh produce, and homemade treats.

Getting Here

Getting to Quadra Island is easy and can be a fast trip or a fun day of touring in itself. Visit the Vancouver Island Visitor's Guide for ideas on enjoying the trip out.

By Car: If traveling from mainland BC, you will take the ferry from either Horseshoe Bay (to Nanaimo) or Tsawwassen (to Victoria). The drive from Nanaimo to Campbell River is 150 km on a 4-lane divided highway that travels through a beautiful stretch of the island.

Once in Campbell River, you will take a 10-minute ferry to Quadra Island. Ferries leave hourly or better. For ferry times, please visit BC Ferries.

By Boat: Either personal boat or boat rented from Campbell River. Those staying at Bold Bay Lakehouse can tie up at the property's private dock on Crescent Channel (also known as Bold Bay). The Lakehouse is a 10-minute walk away.

By Airline: Pacific Coastal and Air Canada fly to the Campbell River airport several times a day. The airport is located only 10 minutes from the ferry terminal by car. An airport shuttle service is available and will bring you directly to the ferry. Westjet flies directly to Comox from Calgary. The travel time from Comox airport to the Campbell River ferry terminal is about 30 minutes by car.
